INFRASTRUCTURE

We manage and maintain our own servers on our domain, including:

  • File server - to help preserve your data
  • Exchange server - to better serve your email, calendar and contact needs (also allows for email access via the web)
  • Web server - to allow direct management of your websites (which hosts www.research.psu.edu and other sites)
  • Application servers (providing access to SIMS, PRAMS)
  • Database servers (storing data to web-based internet applications)

BACKUPS

  • The file server and mail server is backed up nightly through the Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (formerly the Center for Academic Computing).
  • It is best not to utilize the file or web server during the hours of 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
    • Doing so could result in a loss of data.
  • We also recommend that pictures and other un-work-related data be stored at the following location: NON-WORK RELATED ITEMS LOCATION NEEDED
    • Note this location is not backed up.
    • If non-work related items need to be backed up, it is recommended that you use CD's or other external media in addition.

SECURE ENVIRONMENT {back to top}

  • Email Gateway
    • Scans your email for viruses before it is stored in your mailbox
    • Strips infected attachments and also a standard list of attachments that are known to be vulnerable (such as executables or html attachments (.exe, .html, .htm)
    • This helps protect you from newly engineered viruses!
  • Symantec Antivirus Enterprise
    • Automatically updates definitions
  • Patches and Updates
    • We will keep your operating systems and Office software up to date
    • Most software maintenance is done using remote tools and is done off-hours (so we are not interrupting your work day!)
    • Remember to Log Off daily at the end of the day (rather than Shutdown) so we can push the necessary updates out
    • If we are unable to remote to your machine, we may ask that you perform the update yourself (this mainly applies to laptop users)

Out of the 100+ machines we take care of most are from Dell running Windows XP and a few Windows 2000. In order to keep your machine in the most secure environment, all departments have been encouraged to revert to Windows XP. Because of security vulnerabilities, we do not allow operating systems below Windows 2000 to be connected to the domain.
